SEO Services Explained: What You're Actually Buying

"SEO services" is one of those terms that has many answers…

Search for it and you'll find agencies charging £5,000/month, freelancers charging £200/month, and everything in between. Some promise rankings. Others promise traffic. Others promise leads. Some talk about "strategy." Others talk about "technical implementation."

The problem isn't that the industry is confusing. It's that SEO services genuinely vary wildly depending on what you need, what you're willing to invest, and what's realistic for your business.

This page cuts through that. We'll explain what SEO services actually include, what to watch out for, and how to figure out what's right for your situation.

What are SEO services? (the honest answer)

SEO services are the work involved in making your website more visible to search engines and more likely to rank when people search for things related to your business.

That sounds simple. In practice, it breaks into three categories:

1. Strategy and research — Understanding who your customers are, what they search for, what pages matter, and what's actually worth investing in. This is thinking work. It doesn't produce visible deliverables, but it's the foundation of everything else.

2. On-page and content work — Creating, optimising, or improving pages so they answer search intent properly. This includes copywriting, structure, internal linking, and metadata. The work is visible and measurable.

3. Technical SEO — Site speed, mobile performance, indexing, crawlability, security, and the plumbing that search engines need to understand and rank your site. Less visible but often critical.

4. Authority and off-page — Building links, citations, and reputation signals that tell search engines "this site is credible." This is often the slowest part.

Good SEO services combine all four. Bad SEO services focus only on one (usually content or technical) and ignore the rest.

So, what are the SEO services we can help with?

What SEO Services are NOT

Before we talk about what's included, let's be clear on what isn't.

"Guaranteed rankings" — No legitimate SEO service can guarantee you'll rank #1 for anything. Google changes its algorithm constantly. Anyone promising guarantees is either lying or running paid ads and calling it SEO.

"Results in 30 days" — Real SEO takes 6–12 weeks minimum to show meaningful movement, usually longer. If you need visibility next week, you need paid search, not SEO.

"We'll do everything" — You can't outsource SEO completely. Your team needs to own the business context, approve messaging, and make decisions. SEO services guide; they don't replace your leadership.

"Unlimited keywords" — There's no such thing as "unlimited SEO." Every keyword worth ranking for requires strategy, content, and oversight. If someone's offering unlimited for a flat fee, you're getting shallow work on many keywords instead of deep work on the ones that matter.

"One-off project" — SEO works best over time. A competitor update, a new algorithm shift, or a market change can shuffle rankings. The best SEO services include ongoing monitoring and adjustment, not a project that ends and you're left alone.
